Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the efficacy of the additive consisting of viable cells of Clostridium butyricum FERM BP-2789 (Miya-Gold®). The additive is currently authorised in the EU for use as a feed additive for chickens for fattening, chickens reared for laying, turkeys for fattening, turkeys reared for breeding, minor avian species (excluding laying birds), piglets (suckling and weaned) and piglets of minor porcine species. The authorisation for chickens and minor avian (excluding laying birds) is at a minimum level of 2.5 × 108 colony forming unit (CFU)/kg complete feed. The applicant has requested to lower this level to 1.25 × 108 CFU/kg feed. The applicant provided three efficacy trials to support the efficacy of the additive at the newly recommended dose. based on the results of the efficacy trials submitted, the Panel concluded that the additive has the potential to be efficacious as a zootechnical additive in chickens for fattening when added to feed at 1.25 × 108 CFU/kg complete feed. This conclusion was extended to chickens reared for laying and extrapolated to minor poultry for fattening and reared for laying.
